jeep cherokee xj lift... HELP!!?
ok, im 16 and installing a 5.5 in lift on my 95 jeep cherokee and am having a hell of a time, bolts keep breaking, parts wort come out and i dont know what to do, on my rear leaf springs, the shackles bolted into the frame are stressing so much that I think that they are going to break, What should I do If i loose them in there, and also, the upper part of my rear shock, both bolts broke off into the bottom of the car, the shock came off but I dont know how to get the broken part out because you cant get to it from anywhare. One last thing, I am keeping the OEM track bar, i was trying to get the bolt out to drop it, well it came about half way out and stopped, it also wouldnt go back in, so I took a mini grinder and cut off the bolt, it still ownt go down, I guess what Im asking is should I buy a new adjustable track arm? any suggestions will help from experianced people, even if I didnt ask it, feel free to throw it in, anything helps, thanks im kinda at a standstill
WOW..you got your self into a mess, but, this is my kind of subject, I install XJ lift kits all the time. First of all, you shouldnt have took everything apart all at once, you should have started the front and then finished it before you even got the the rear..but it sounds like its to late..its ok though.
Your "95" XJ is going to have a lot of rust on those bolts, you should get some liquid wrench or some PB spray, these products will help ALOT !! let them soak into the threads, it will make your life easier. You may have to get new bolts..( another pain) but you can go to a Jepp dealer and go to the Parts room and tell them the year, model, and what bolt you are needing and they can order it for you. The bolts that broke off for the shock, you will need to get a drill and a small drill bit ( make sure its a drill bit that can drill through steel ), here you will also need some of that liquid wrench..remember to keep your drill bit oiled or it will get to hot and break. once you have drilled about half way through it, they make a tool you can get at most part stores (I recoment Auto Zone ) that can tap into the bolt that you drilled into and it has a reverse cut grip on it, once you tap it into the bolt turn it as if you would the bolt, it will grip the broken bolt and pull it out without messing up your threads, make sure you are keeping it sprayed down with your oil spray ( PB, WD-40 ) something like that ) it takes some time, but its the only way.
The Track bar, if you are lifting your XJ 5.5 inches, your OEM track bar isnt going to work, you WILL NEED a longer one !
use a slender steel punch to knock the bolt out, or a large Nail..what ever you got, When you buy a new track bar, it will come with a new bolt, I recoment the Rubicon Express Super duty track bar and jonny join Track bar Bracket, then you can install the track bar Brace which is something you will want after going 5.5
I had a rear leaf bolt break on me before into the frame OMG..I will tell you it was not fun, I had to gring, cut and weld because there is no way to get to where it bolts into the frame, i had to cut a small hole on the inside of the frame, hold the nut that WAS welded to the inside of the frame to get the bolt out.PAIN IN THE A>S>S.!!
