How does lateral displacement of light depend upon angle of incidence?
I need a detailed experiment (observations et al) on how lateral displacement of a ray of light passing through a glass slab vary with the angle of incidence, how it depends on the wavelength, and under what conditions it could undergo total internal reflection.
OK the easiest way to do this experiment is using a light ray and a D-shaped block in a dark room, on a piece of white paper.
To test how the lateral displacement changes, you just need to get a table comparing the angle of incidence to the angle of refraction by drawing round the block and along the lines of light on the paper. After measuring the angles, you can work out the lateral displacement from the angle of incidence using trigonometry.
To test what happens when you change the wavelength, simply use monochromatic light (put a filter in front) and change the colour, observing what difference it makes to the angles.
To test for total internal reflection, you need to aim the light at the centre of the base of the D, so it doesn't refract on the curved surface, then change the angle of incidence until id doesn't refract any more, instead reflecting back into the block. Measure the angle for which this happens (the critical angle)
