How do I wire 14/3 cable to an existing 14/2 cable power source for a new bath fan and new switch?
usually use 14/3 if you have a light on your fan, in order to be able to turn your light on, or your fan on with two separate switches. If you only have a fan, then just leave the red wire out, and install it like normal. (white to white, and black from light to switch, and black from power to switch, and put the red wire in the back of the box) if you have a light on your fan, and you want to be able to have 2 switches, then you would put two pig tails on the power source (a wire nut and two short wires to attach to two switches) and you normally put the black wire to the light, and the red wire to the fan, attach one pig tail to each switch, and tie all the whites together with a wire nut.
