Bike Tire Valve

How do I use a Presta valve to blow up my Schwinn road bike tire?
I unscrew the valve until it is fully extended, screw the adapter over top, hook up the pump and all i get is resistance from the pump and no air blowing out. What am i doing wrong?
Quite often, the valve will "stick" if you haven't inflated it in some time. In that case, the force of air in the hose is not enough to push the valve inward and open it. Give it a tap (with your finger) and burp a little air out. Then put your inflator or pump head over it and place the locking lever in its correct position. You only need to place it far enough to catch the lower thread on the stem. If it still does not inflate the tire, pull the pump head off and make sure air comes out of it. Usually tho, just making sure the presta valve is not stuck will do it. If all else fails, the valve may just be broken. Once you unscrew it, and make sure it pushes inward, you should easily hear air come out or in the case of a deflated or new tube, blow a small amount of air into the tire to ease installation of new.
