Bulb Lamp Spotlight
Can someone tel me what kind of lights I need for a Horsfield Tortoise?
I've read in various places that I need a day bulb, basking bulb & UV but Im confused - what does each bulb do, where can I get them from & do I really need all 3?
Do I need special lamps for the bulbs or can I just use students spotlights with the appropriate bulb?
Also where can I find inexpensive hemp bedding in the UK?
the UV lighting is to mimic the sun in day light it provides a good source of vit D which is what tortoises get from the sun i use on with UVA and B but you have to make sure that you replace them every six months as the become less effective over time, you should also get a good calcium supplement as well, a spot light is good for providing heat but it is the UV lighting the tortoises need to help with digestion and healthy bone growth, you can take full advantage of the summer and put your tortoise outside to get the natural UV rays, as for hemp bedding you should not use this with tortoises, there has been warnings put out by the tortoise trust on the dangers of hemp and tortoises, it can contain small Sharpe bits which has been the cause of eye injuries and even death in tortoises who have swallowed hemp, so i would not recommend getting it, if it is for a tortoise table then soil and childrens play sand can be used, but not the sand where you feed the tortoise as sometimes it can be injested and cause a blockage, if it is for bedding i used timothy hay, tortoises can eat this so will not harm them if eaten and it does not contain sharpe bits to damage the eyes or mouths, a good site for supplies is the tortoiseshop.com, but as i said i would avoid the hemp for bedding, if you want to see the article on the hemp you can find it at www.tortoisetrust.org and it is in newsletter number 6, hope you find what you are looking for best of luck.
