How do I rough in a lighting fixture in a finished ceiling?

I want to add a light/ceiling fan in a room that currently does not have a light fixture in the center of the ceiling. What I wanted to know is what is the best way to make the cuts from the light switch to the center of the ceiling without taking down a lot of drywall?

if it's a light and your local housing laws does not require you to have your cables secured using pvc casings, I suggest a creative way of using a coloured or white pvc wiring pipe and just fix them onto the wall and ceiling using clips.

If your local law allows conceal wiring, then i suggest cutting out only small portion of the drywall just enough to fix the cables in and later plastering them back. I hope the frame behind the dry wall is aluminium, which is easier to work with. Bore holes thru the structure to allow cables to go thru instead of cutting them. This will ensure minimal damage to the wall. I suggest using pvc pipes to protect the cables from damaging if you're going to do any thing to the wall later on, like hanging a picture frame with a screw.

For teh ceiling, if you've got a false ceiling, chances are you have a service hole, which gains you access to the space inbetween the ceiling and the boards. Lay the cables in with pvc pipes and try to reach for them from holes that you've cut for lights.

For ceiling fans, they can't be mounted on a false ceiling as they're too heavy for them to take. Mount it on the ceiling.
