how to replace a ceiling fan with chandelier?
I want to replace my ceiling fan with a chandelier. I took out the ceiling fan and it has four wires: red, black, white and the ground. My chandelier only has three: two clear wires and the ground. I connected each of the clear ones to the red and black, and the ground together, but its not working. I tried switching them to red and white, but the outcome is the same. Any suggestions?
I'll guess that the red and the black wires were both "hot" for the fan and for a light built into the fan. The white wire would be the return for both the fan and the fan's light.
One of the chandelier's clear wires must be connected to the white (return) wire. (If there is one of the clear wires with some sort of marking on it connect that one to the white.) The other clear chandelier wire will be connected to the red or the black wire - which ever one will supply power to the new fixture. The unused wire of the red-black pair must be securely capped-off.
How to decide which (red or black) will be the new supply wire? If your new light will be controlled by a switch located in the site of the old fan control a visual inspection might tell you. Or, you could separate the wires in the ceiling box and use a tester to determine which one is hot when you activate the switch you hope to use to control the chandelier.
