My husband and I rented an apartment in Florida for 8 months. When we moved out we left the apartment clean.?
2 weeks later we recieved a notice of intent to withhold our security deposit plus an additional bill for $1555.00 for cleaning and replacing blinds and ceiling fans, etc. because of a cigeratte odor. We were never advised of a no smoking policy, they do not have one, and the manager was aware that we were smokers. I sent them a letter by certified mail objecting but they still turned the bill over to a collection agency. Can they do that without ever taking us to court?? I told them that I wouldn't fight them if they kept my $400 security deposit but do I have to pay the additional charges they are asking for?

Maybe you should respect other peoples stuff. Smoking is disgusting and of course the house will stink after you move out and leave your stinking residue behind. How hard would it have been to respect someone elses house and smoke outside??
Start saving (maybe quit and use that money saved) because you are going to have to pay. your lucky it isnt more expensive.
