How can I tell if it's real crystal?
I recently bought this chandelier from a light store (not a chain store) that cost me 600 dollars. The guy who sold it told me that it was made out of real crystals. How can I determine if it is real or not real without going to a pawn shop..?
That's tough to answer with that information.
Depends on what kind of real crystal you're hoping that it is. I'm assuming that you're going from "is it glass?" Quartz versus a clear amethyst or diamond (it's obviously not diamond, I'm just saying) would all require different techniques to determine authenticity.
Plus, the man could have been telling the absolute truth - sort of. "Real crystal" does not have to mean "real geologic mineral crystal." Crystal can mean a type of blown glass, a style of construction out of common materials that just looks pretty.
Commercial crystal, and geologic crystal are very different. If you have a chandelier of all beautiful, perfectly transparent, absolutely beautifully cut crystals, you'll bet yourself 100% that it's commercial crystal, not geologic crystal.
But if it's pretty, does it matter? Unless you were ripped off, of course.
He's probably talking what is known as lead crystal, a form of very shiny and attractive glass coming from having lead oxide added to its basic SiO2 structure.
