Ceiling fan chain broke, and now, I can't shut it off!?
I went to turn on my ceiling fan, and pulled the chain. Well, the entire chain broke off at the fan end, the entire chain. Now, it's on HIGH and I can't shut it off. HELP!
If the fan and/or light is not controlled by a switch on the wall then your only way to turn it off is to turn off the breaker in the service supply box. If you don't know what this is...It is the main box that separates the incoming high amperage power from your power company to smaller individual circuits that run throughout your house. If you don't know where it is, go outside and trace the large wire from a pole (assuming it is above ground) to where it meets your house. If is below ground , it will connect to your electrical meter on the outside of your house. Anyway, Your circuit box will be withing 15 feet of that meter. Inside or outside your house. Open the cover (sometimes need a screwdriver). Hopefully your "breakers" will be labeled and you will know right away which one controls your fan. If they are not labeled you need someone inside watching the fan. Turn the smaller breakers (not the "MAIN" large one) off one at a time until the fan goes off. Of course, turning them back on if they are not the right one. During this process, you are turning power off and on throughout your house so turn off computers or anything that is surge sensitive before you start. If unable to find the correct breaker you can turn your "main" breaker off. (usually near or at the top of the rows of breakers and labeled "100A or 200A") All the power in your house will be off now. If you have fuses and not breakers they will look like the metal end of a light bulb and they unscrew.
Now, that you have it off you can fix the string. Those chains go into the body of the fan through a little collar called a ferrule. That should unscrew from the fan and slide down the chain, (in your case just come off because the chain is gone) Hopefully there will now be a little bit of chain showing and you can just get a new chain from a hardware store with one of those coupling ends and clip it on, slide the ferrule back on and turn your power back on. If there is no more chain to connect to then you can replace if from inside the motor housing and that too is something you can handle but will require alot more instruction.
