What lubrication(oil, grease) should I use on the fan in my space heater?
I have a small space heater, the fan keeps getting stuck when i turn it on. i tried using regular oil that you can buy anywhere(3-in-1/household multipurpose) but it only helps once.. the next time i turn it off and back on the fan blade sticks again(plus my whole livingroom smells like burning motor oil for an hour or so after it starts). Is there a better lubrication for fan blades that are near heat?
i have also already taken it apart once and cleaned out all the dust and pet hair that had accumulated inside.
wd-40 is horrible on fans, it causes more dust build-up. i believe it says so right on the can.
it works PERFECTLY as soon as oil hits it... i think the oil just dries out when i turn it off..
i have already gone through about 5 fans and heaters due to my old dusty apartment and pets dander/hair... id rather find a good solution over constantly buying more.
Hey there! i just came up with a solution that works for me for that exact same problem! i have this heater from the early 70's that ive been using to heat my hang-out shed. ever since i started using it it has been really loud and shaky and you can hear how slow the fan is going. i tried using wd-40, and that made it better for a while, but then after a day or so, it actually got worse! (i think the WD-40 killed what was left of the 30 year old grease in there!)
then i used some silicone spray, and that made it a little better again, back to about original.
finally i got sick of its poor performance so i decided today i was going to fix it for good (or at least for a while) or replace it. so i took it all apart, and the part where the fan blade is attached to a shaft and goes into this magnet housing with a copper coil, i took that out (had to remove some mounting screws) and cleaned everything very thoroughly.
lastly i covered the part that goes into the magnet housing with heat resistant bearing grease i found laying around. it feels like its putting out about 4 times the RPM's now! ive never heard it so happy. it just hums along quietly, and all you can hear is the warm air rushing out!
so in summary, take everything apart (unplugged, of course), clean EVERYTHING, and glop grease over every moving part related to the fan! especially the innards of the motor itself!
