1989 honda accord LX 2Bbl A20A1 clicking on acceleration...?
The problem is a clicking noise under load. I have changed the driveaxles, replaced the power steering pump (that was leaking and suspect in the issue), flushed the transmission, adjusted the timing for optimal performance, replaced the spark plugs and wires (indexed them as well...with proper gap), checked the belts and pulleys and found no issue, water pump is new, timing belt is new and tensioned properly, suspension was checked, wheel bearings were checked... nothing. The noise is ONLY under load and the engine has 175K miles. It is carburated with mild modification. There is no issue with the mods or caused by the mods. This has just started after I got work done... new oil pump, ignition system, etc. The engine mounts are a little worn, but nothing major. I have checked practically everything. I have worked on Honda's for years, but this has stumped me. I work at Advance Auto with ASE certified techs that cannot answer this. I need help bad.
Pre-detonation. The engine experiences an explosion within the cylinder while the piston is still traveling upwards on the compression stroke. Normally, the ignition of fuel happens right when the piston is at TDC (top dead center) and presses the piston downward in the cylinder which in turn turns the crankshaft via connecting rods. With 175,000 miles on that sucker, the internals (valves, rotating assembly, etc) are pretty worn out and you probably have a bunch of carbon buildup. Many things can cause predetonation, but either way you should probably consider a rebuild, especially given your upgrades to the motor. Good luck.
