1994 buick regal intermittently dies with no warning?
For no reason, dry, wet, hot, cold my buick dies. The "check gage" (not engine) light comes on, the oil pressure gauge and rpm go to zero and I loose power. When I put it in park it often restarts first try, sometimes must wait a couple of minutes. There is no warning. 1st mech. guessed at fuel pump and new wiring harness to the tune of $1100.00. Happened again 2 weeks later. 2nd mech. drove for 2 weeks, no problem and no codes. Recently, "check eng" on and 3 codes pulled. Tech said these 2 together 90% meant ecm. (can't remember codes, can look up when I get home, one was for the crankshaft sensor, which was replaced 1 year ago when the eng light came on, by the way, the same 2 codes came up then too and the 1st mech did the css because it was the cheapest! I don't go to him anymore!!) and 3rd code was for transmission torque, however car shifts fine. Now, it's died each day for 3 days in a row. Should I get the ecm replaced at $425.00 or does anyone have another guess?
While an Ecm failure is not out of the realm of possibility, I would check for a poor connection somewhere. Check the crank sensor connector and make sure that the terminals all have good terminal tension. Check any ECM grounds for looseness or damaged connections. Make sure that the battery terminal threads are not stripped and causing a poor connection. Take them off the battery and physically check them. Have someone print you a schematic of the ECM power and ground circuits. Check these carefully for backed out terminals or poor contact. Since a crank sensor code is being set, I would start there first and then check everything else.
You can also try this. With the engine running grab hold of various wiring harnesses in the engine bay and wiggle them. If you have a poor connection somewhere, when it is moved the failure could be induced to happen.
Be careful when working around the belt area!!!!!!!!!!
