After being in the ceiling fan business for over 25 years, I can say without a doubt that there are huge differences between ceiling fans, particularly when it comes to hugger fans. Hugger fans are notorious for "NOT" moving hardly any air. This is because when you get the blades of a ceiling fan too close to the ceiling, it causes the air to bounce up and down between the blades and the ceiling rather than flowing smoothly around them. So with most ceiling fans, this can cause the fan to "Shudder" or wobble profusely. So most hugger ceiling fans have tiny motors with blades that are nearly flat. This reduces the bouncing air effect, but it also significantly reduces the airflow.
There are a few hugger ceiling fans that are designed differently than other hugger fans and are still able to move lots of air without shuddering or vibrating. The hugger fans I am referring to are made by Minka Aire, Modern Fan Company, Emerson and Casablanca.

Also, keep in mind that hugger fans are specifically designed for use in rooms that have ceilings lower than 8 feet. Most other ceiling fans are designed for ceilings that are 8 feet tall. So if your ceiling is NOT lower than 8 feet, you most likely should be considering a standard mount ceiling fan.
