Substitute spiral CFL for "B" base incandescent?
I have a ceiling fan that calls for 2 X 40 watt "B" bulbs. I know that "B" bulbs are decorative bulbs, the elongated, flame shaped bulb used in chandeliers. 2 X 40 W bulbs, whether incandescent or CFL's, are simply not bright enough for the room. The light fixture is not totally enclosed, the lights are covered with a dome but not right up tight to the fixture. I know that I can use CFL's either equivelant to 40 W bulbs or higher because of the lower wattage of CFL's. So, I want to use CFL's that are equivelant to 100 bulbs, the wattage of each would be 23 W, I know I'm okay there. The problem is that CFL's in the "B" shape aren't available in anything over 40 W. Is there any problem with using the spiral CFL's even thought the fixture calls for "B" bulbs.
Many ceiling fans have a dimmer for their lights, which is not compatible with florescent bulbs, CFL or otherwise. You'll need incandescent bulbs for use with a dimmer. But if the lights only have an on-off switch, you should be able to use CFL bulbs as long as the power rating is not exceeded.
