can we install split AC's outdoor condensing unit indoor (above the drop-down ceiling)? Historic Building?
we are inside a historic building. and not allowed to have a condensing unit outdoor.
and my contractor suggest to have the condensing unit above the indoor drop-down ceiling.
is that useful and efficient?
any suggestions?
Wait - something absolutely doesn't make sense...
Okay - the condensing unit is the part of the system that "expels" the heat from inside to the outside. No - there's no possible way a condensing unit could be installed anywhere inside, and definitely not trapped within a dropdown ceiling! It would be totally inefficient, as the "indoor" heat it's trying to exchange would be STILL indoors. Yes, it'd be trapped within the ceiling - but in addition to that heat causing a lot of problems, the unit would quickly only be able to take in hotter and hotter air, when (relatively) cool air is needed to make the system work.
The only things I can think of are -
1. There are essentially 2 parts to an a/c system, the condensing unit and the air handler - which for simplicity is the blower. The air handler IS usually installed above a dropdown ceiling...are terms being confused?
2. Sorry to be frank - but maybe your contractor is a HACK. (Though - it's hard to believe even a hack contractor would suggest that...)
I do understand your issue...is it possible to put your condensor on the roof?
I mean, even historic buildings get hot! I'm in Dallas - and KNOW of a/c'd historic buildings, built waaay before a/c was invented.
Maybe you could appeal this to someone?
There are certainly ways to have a/c that do not compromise the historic valus of a building.
