infrared kelvin range?
hey i found a calculation to find the wavelength given off by a material at a certain kelvin temp, and i found these infrared sensors that dtect in the range of 8 to 14 microns and i found out that the range in kelvins is like from -112 F to 190 F????
i am not sure if this is correct . if not then could someone help me find what the real range is,
the site also said that 8 to 15 is the range in you pick up humans , but that is a huge range??????
I believe the equation you're using is the wavelength of maximum intensity from a blackbody spectrum:
lambda_max = C / T
Where C is a well-known constant. Since you have two bounds, we'll calculate the lower to check your answer. 8 microns is 8e-6 m.
T=2.897768 m*K / 8 microns = 362.22100 K = 192.3 F
What this means that if you looked at the thermal spectrum from an object at 362 K, the wavelength which would emit the most would be 8e-6 m, or the middle of the infrared spectrum.
You're right to say that's a huge range. Since human body temperature doesn't go much above 100 F, I'd say that 8 microns is a little low and 15 would match up in the negative Fahrenheit range, and therefore would be a little high.
100 F ~ 10 microns. Take what you will from that.
