I put hot oil in a plastic container and it cracked. Is it safe to use?
So, I was making a homemade hair cream/oil. I put all of the ingredients in my cast iron pot which gets very hot. When it was done, I left it for only about 2 minutes before I started to get inpatient. I went ahead and poured it in my hard plastic container. I heard bubbling and crackling noises, you know, the sound that's usually made when something is deep frying. I poured the mixture back into the pot where it made even more noises.. After a few minutes, I looked at the container and it was cracked. So, I was wondering if it's safe for me to use the mixture I made after that happened? I mean, it's not like I'm eating it. It's only for my hair. Will there be any chemicals in it?
I'm guessing so long as you just put it on your hair it probably won't cause you any harm. I certainly wouldn't advise eating anything you'd done this with though. Also if you are getting plastic REALLY hot (especially if it starts to melt, burn, or develop discolored patches on it), I would suggest ventilating the room in order to remove any poisonous fumes that might have been produced. As Tom Dickson says, you don't want to breathe that stuff.
Incidentally, I happen to know someone who was trying to make candy once, boiled some sugar and syrup and stuff in a metal pan, and poured it into a microwaveable plastic container not realizing how hot it was, completely melting a hole through the bottom of the container. I don't think there was much candy left to eat after that anyway, but your story reminded me of it.
