Does high albedo concrete increase light pollution at night?
So I'm studying for Professional LEED accreditation for Commercial Interiors. Under this certification track you can get a half point for a building with high albedo (light reflective) concrete parking lots for non-roof heat island reduction. You can also get half a point under a different credit for light fixtures (ie parking lot lights) that reduce light trespass and light pollution in the night sky. My question is, wouldn't the good intentions of the first mitigate the good intentions of the second? Wouldn't the high albedo concrete just bounce the light straight up into the night sky?
Very interesting question. I guess it is the lesser of two evils: higher heat production or higher light production.
Most of the problems with light pollution has been due to lights which were not aimed at the ground (no reflectors) and the concrete is not 100% reflective, so I'll have to say streetlamp design is more important than concrete albedo regarding light pollution and concrete albedo does reduce the absorption of daylight and production of heat versus using asphalt.
Of course the use of plants and natural spaces throughout the parking lot would do more to abosrb energy and reduce the heat island effect. I have included a link to a company that takes thermographic images of buildings to measure heat loss and heat gain which shows how on a hot day the plants in the photo actually absorb energy compared to their surroundings. Just roll your mouse over the photos to see the thermographs. Look specifically at the colour of the trees.
