How much does it cost to leave a computer running 24/7?
I need this info to prove a point to my moms jerk boyfriend who leaves his computer running even when he is sleeping, and then he blames ME for our high energy bill.
If you need this info, its a 2005 dell media center, so it's pretty farking big. It uses an LCD monitor and has a very old, very LOUD sound system, plus the fan and ceiling light he keeps running all day and night. He says this is all just a flicker and doesn't make any difference in our energy bill. Please help me prove a point!
they sell power meters in home improvement stores (lowes, Home Depot...) that can measure the load for whatever devices are plugged in to give you an estimate of the direct cost of electricity. Those meters sell for around US$20.
A lot harder to measure is the cooling costs; especially during the warmer months those devices put out a good deal of heat. if you are running the air conditioner that costs more money to compensate for the heat from those devices.
I run 4 computers in the same room. those 4 computers keep my room quite warm in the winter months but i pay for it dearly when i have to run the ac in the summer.
