What factors led to 'Global Warming' in the past, and how do we know they aren't the current cause?
There is no question that warming cycles (or cooling, for that matter) have been a part of earth's history. Why are we so sure this one is different?
One factor that caused Global Warming in the past were major Seismic events:

One such event caused the Isthmus of Panama to close stoping the flow of water from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. This caused the water circulation patterns to change, causing the planet to go into a deep freeze. Then major volcanic activity rose CO2 levels to 550 times what they are today which started the warming effect then when the oceans thawed out water vapor continued the warming trend at a rapid pace. The resulting rain washed the atmosphere of the buildup of CO2.
The key thing here is that the CO2 level had to be extremely high to even start to cause this warming trend. It also happened rapidly, since with such a deep freeze the planet needed to respond quickly to get itself out of the frozen state it found itself in. (read the article Snowball earth.)
The thing is siesmic events can cause fissures in the earths crust that release gases.
I don't feel this is happening now, but we are experincing more seismic events than I even imagined we were.

One more thing from my research the CO2 level would have to be a lot higher than it is today to start any sort of warming trend on it's own. There are other factors at play that we aren't being told about.
Also the CO2 level would have to get to 5000 PPM to be harmful to human health:
"Conclusion. According to government mine safety regulations, atmospheric CO2 would have to rise as high as 5000 ppm before it posed a direct threat to human health. Since no scientist predicts a rise of this magnitude in the next century, the anticipated rise in CO2 levels should be viewed as beneficial. Even if temperatures increase slightly, life on earth will thrive."
