I'm an aspiring author! I need some motivation ideas!?
Before I Go Into Detail, I've known what i wanted to be in life scince i was five at the age on 9 i was already considering universities, I'm serious about this I only want serious anwsers please.
I'm an aspiring author aged 12, I have some real ligh bulb ideas! But I write them down and then I get bored. Does anyone have any suggestions how I could motivate my self to write something and continue it untill its finished. It would be a great help! Like i said before no silly anwsers and comments on my age.
Thank you.
I've been in the same situation as you, knowing what I wanted to do since I was very young. I also had the problem of writing down ideas and then getting bored.
The problem is, every writer works differently, for example I've not gone to university, I've not gotten a degree or a-level in English because I figured out that for me, it was putting me OFF writing, I was being told what to write, when to write, and even how to write and to write in a way that wasn't me. So I decided that I could write anywhere, any time, and didn't need any sort of qualification to get published.
So the only way I can help you is to tell you what worked for me, and then you will have to take what you think may work for you and give it a go.
I don't go into excessive planning. If I have an idea, and I sit down and write each stage of the plot, I've lost any chance of my characters surprising me (and believe me, my characters can throw me some real problems sometimes). I know where I want them to start, I know where I want them to end up, and I know a couple of the obstacles they have to overcome to get there, and then I start writing.
I don't always start writing with the story I have in my head either. I have a very good friend, who is also an aspiring author, and if we have a new character, we role-play with them for a couple of weeks, It helps us get a feel for this new person in our heads, helps determine how the runaway princess is going to react to a nice wet bog, will she grit her teeth and march on forward with no complaints despite her discomfort? or will she cry and scream and insist on being carry by one of the other companions?
Once I know my main characters inside out, then I start them on their journey, I don't often need to throw too many distractions of obstacle at them now, because now I know how my characters react to certain situations, they start telling me about their past.
for example, I had a mermaid once who was on land looking for her sister (her sister was trying to stop the towns killing mermaid for their scales) ... I'd been writing this plot thread for about a week, and suddenly, she tells me that she doesn't want to take her sister back to the sea, because the prince want to force her into marriage with him O.O my first unplanned obstacle, but it worked brilliantly.
The only other thing I can suggest is don't force yourself to write. If you force it out, not only is it not going to be any good, but you're going to get frustrated that it's not any good, and it'll become a vicious circle. Write slowly, and steadily.
There's a website I use for advice If I get into a slump, run by published author Holly Lisle (which I'll link in my source section below) where there''s a group of aspiring writers, and we all try and write between 250-500 words a day, steadily. It's not a problem if we miss a day, or two or even a week or more, but every time we write, we post how many words and we help encourage each other.
One last thing, getting published is difficult, have a backup plan. You WILL eventually need to pay rent and bills, and it's highly likely that your writing won't cover it. I have completed courses in IT to cover me and my expenses, if you're as determined as you sound, you WILL get published, but it won't happen quickly so make sure you have other options available to you.
