That is a very competitive field to get into, especially now. People just aren't buying airplanes, which means there is very little chance for someone new to get into the game.
If you can get in, and if you're able to make sales its a great job, especially if you are selling new planes. I know a Cirrus demo pilot who I am convinced has the best job in the world. He gets a new airplane every year, or every time a major change comes out. It is, for all practical purposes, his airplane. He flies it all over the place showing the airplane to anyone that shows any interest in buying one.
The specifics of what you could make is part of your contract, but as a jumping off point 2% is about a fair starting point. For a $500,000 airplane thats $10,000. Sell one a month and you'll be making pretty good money. If the market is right, and you are selling a good airplane you can sell a few a month. If you're doing that good odds are the manufacturer will bring in another salesman, which will cut into your income, but will also give you some much needed time.
But I really don't think you'll have much luck getting into sales now.
