Coloured light bulb shining wrong shade?
How can this happen?
I got a deep blue spiral florescent bulb for an up-lighter lamp. In the shade itself it looks pale blue (frosted glass shade) but in the room it's filled with lavender colour light. Everything looks light purple.
The colours and furnishings of the living room are blue, silver, white and cream. I was hoping for a nice cool blue but get light purple everywhere, except if i put the main light on which is daylight spiral and shows up true colours. I got the blue bulb as background lighting, but to shine blue in the whole room, not just in the lamp shade.
It's like ultra violet light in the room.
It is energy saving, I'll give it that, but maybe if i had got an ordinary blue bulb it would have actually given off blue light in the room.
Is it a faulty bulb or just how they are?
It's just the way they are. Florescent bulbs have a different CRI (color rendering index) than normal bulbs, meaning they will "change" the color of their surroundings, even if they are tinted in a different color. You could buy one of those party bulbs. It might give you better color. They're only 25 watts so it won't be real bright, but at least it doesn't use much energy.
