is 2# test line good for trout and panfish?
i bought a bass pro mini light rod and reel combo. it says 2-6# test line and i bought 2# is that good or no?
A good 2lb test line will be your top choice.
2lb test lines will give you longer casting distance and more hits. Many will be very surprised how much a 2lb test line could do. 2lb test really isn't that hard to use. You need to pay attention to your drag tension and knots. You'll be doing that with other test lines anyway; you just need to pay a little more attention with 2lb test lines that's all. You will also need to know your reel's limitations too.
Not all reels are as smooth as they should be. Some drags are choppy. Some drags don't pick up as quickly as others. Some spincast reels create too much unnecessary friction for 2lb test lines to handle. You will need to decide if your reel is suitable for 2lb test lines. If it is, you will need to adjust your drag tension according to your reel's limitations.
You choice of knot will be important as well. Since you don't have much to work with in the first place, you must pick a knot that breaks very close to your line's breaking strength. Just keep in mind those knots will slip if you didn't make enough loops around the line. Also, you must check your knot very frequently for slippage.
Landing big fish with 2lb test lines really isn't that difficult. Your fishing experience will be somewhat similar to tuna fishing with 17-20lb test lines. It will take you longer but it is very doable. As long as there aren't branches and big rocks in the water for your line to scape on, you will do fine. If it would make you feel more comfortable, even 6lb test lines couldn't hold up to those situations. I have caught quite a few double digit fish with 2lb test lines. I don't consider ultra-light fishing a stunt unless I am looking at a 20+ pound carp (or a 12+ pound carp in a relatively fast moving stream/river).
PS: I have caught quite a few stocked trout that were around 10 pounds with 2lb test lines. Compare to carp of similar size, the fight lasted a lot shorter. Big carp could spool you but big trout won't (unless you were fishing in a very fast moving stream or river).
