why has ruby in fuchsite pendant has changed colour?
i recently bought a pendant in my favourite stone, ruby in fuchsite. the fuchsite is a light green with white flecks. i've worn it constantly for about 3 weeks and all of a sudden i realised it has turned a much darker green when i looked at it last night. could this be due to the spell of warm weather we've been having? i would have thought sunlight would fade a colour rather than darken it. can anyone offer a good explanation of why this might be and also if it is possible to reverse the colour change? (It is currently in a glass of chilled water in the fridge!) my own research via Google has proved fairly fruitless.ps i don't really believe in all the 'new age' qualties attributed to stones and crystals, i would prefer an (easy to understand) scientific explanation if possible, please. thanks.
Sunlight is associated with fading colors due to dyes breaking down in the heat and UV of the sun (think old cola cans which cease being red by a roadside).
Many minerals do change color when exposed to a lot of radiation, however usually sunlight is not enough. For example, topaz is typically clear to yellow, blue topaz being produced by exposure to X-rays.
Fuchsite is a form of muscovite, a type of mica, which has a layered structure much like the pages of a book. I would not soak it in water for this reason (although if properly polished this may not be the problem I am fearing). I have no data available on darkening color, but anything which could flake off lighter surface layers may cause the stone to appear to darken.
