Acoustic Guitar: Nylon vs Steel strings -please help?
I'm taking up the acoustic guitar yet am still unsure as to which strings to get. I know it depends on what style of music and I was wondering what stringed-guitar (nylon or steel) to get for the following sort of songs:
Wonderwall [oasis]
Freelove Freeway
You're Beautiful - (+ most ofJames Blunt)
You're Lovely To Me (yes you are)
Breakfast at tiffany's
Overkill (+ most other Collin Hay songs)
Slide [Goo goo dolls]
Naive (+ other kooks)
Follow the Light [Travis]
anyway hoperfully you catch my drift and I really appreciate any help anyone could give, it would mean a lot to me if somebody could help.

I've played, gigged, taught, horsetraded and repaired guitars on the side for 20+ years(I'm an engineer until 5pm), so here goes...
For younger players (<13), start with nylon. Get a steel stringed guitar, restring with nylon, and when the player is ready for steel-usually when they start asking for an electric-, restring and set up the guitar for steel strings. DON'T EVER EVER EVER PUT STEEL STRINGS ON A CLASSICAL GUITAR. Classical guitars don't have truss rods, and putting steel strings on one will bend the neck and ruin the instrument.
You sound like you're over 13, so get a good starter pack from the local music store. If you haven't started playing yet, go with a friend, and have the friend test-drive a few choices in your price range. I'm not going to recommend anything specific, since there are a lot of good entry-level guitars out there. Do an A/B comparison. Listen to your friend play the same music on different guitars, and make your choices. Sit down with the guitars, and see if they feel OK to you.
For lessons, lose the books and DVD's- they'll help, but nothing beats a live instructor for the basics. I recommend searching out a local nonprofit music school or community college for group lessons. The advantage of group instruction at places like that is the instructors usually have degrees in the field, they tend to charge less than the music stores, and you can meet other players at your ability level to find a practice partner or to set up jam sessions. I can't stress the last enough- students lose interest in an instrument for two main reasons- 1) Unplayable, lousy 'student' instruments- at least on a guitar, a good professional setup can take care of most of that, and 2) No-one to practice or play with.
