Do you feel the movie Juno made light of casual teenage sex? Would you let you child watch it?
No, I don't feel that way.
It took me a little while to realize it, but Juno makes light of her pregnancy because that's the only way she can deal with it and feel normal. Her whole personality is quirky. Aside from the fact that she is pregnant, you don't really get the feeling that everything she does is actively done because she is pregnant. That is, she isn't constantly talking about the baby and so on.
How I know she didn't treat it lightly:
1. She decides against abortion
2. She knows she doesn't want to raise the child on her own, even if her parents decide to support her.
3. She immediately seeks out adoptive parents and makes it very clear that she does not want an active role in the child's life.
4. She feels deceived in her choice of adoptive parents when the husband comes on to her, but is comforted with the knowledge of how much the wife wants the child.
The movie itself does not glorify pregnancy at all. Nor does it glorify teenage sex.
This is the sort of movie a parent should watch with her teenage child. I wouldn't recommend that a teen watch it on her own with friends. Also, there are some things lying under the surface in the film that I think only someone who has been through teenage pregnancy/or has an adult's perspective could actually get.
