Can any one give me any advice with regards to testing a lighting curcuit ?
Im am currently studying C&G 2330 and am having trouble coming to terms understanding the testing process for lighting circuits.
R1 + R2 and all that ?
My workbook for college is useless .
Would be very very grate full if anyone could explain the process
Why not visit the library, and borrow a book on basic electricity?
For the context of house wiring, a book on basic house wiring would help too.
In a nutshell, however, there are a few "laws" you need to remember:
( I use the convention that _ means everything after is subscript, until the next space or punctuation)
1) Ohm's law: Voltage = i (Current) times Resistance.
This can be rearranged so that i= v / r, and r = v / i.
This can be used on just one resistor: V_1 = i_1 * r_1.
It can also be used on the whole: V_total = i_total times r_total
2) Power = Voltage times current. Also rearrangeable.
3) Kirchoff's voltage law: in a parallel circuit (or branch), the voltage is the same across each device. In a series circuit, the sum of the voltages around the circuit is zero. eg: a 1.5 v battery is connected to a resistor. The voltage rise (due to battery) is 1.5. The voltage drop across the resistor must then be -1.5.
4) kirchoff's current law: The sum of the current entering a node (connection point) must be equal to the sum of the current(s) leaving the node. ex: if 100 amps comes into the breaker box, then 100 amps must leave the box (through multiple branches)
5) total resistance in a series branch or circuit is just R_total = R_1 + R_2 + ... + R_n. Where n is the number of resistors.
6) total resistance in a parallel branch is (1/R_total) = (1/R_1) + (1/R_2) + ... + (1/R_n)
That's 3 hours * 14 weeks of a first year college course, summarized above.
