Installing a end of the run combination gfci outlet and switch to turn light fixture.?
I'm trying to install or add a vanity light in my bathroom. The house is more than 50 yrs old and wirings coming out from the source (from another box with an outlet) are 4 wires and not sure what color. What I'm trying to do is replace regular outlet with an end-of-the run receptacle with a combination GFCI outlet/swith to turn a vanity light in my bathroom. Is this possible? I need somebody to tell me how to wire the GFCI receptacle that is tapped from another outlet to turn the vanity light which is going to be at the end of the line.
You need to determine which wires are the phase conductors and which ones are the neutrals. There is probably two wires which come from the panelboard, and two which feed downstream devices. I can't figure out why four wires would be coming from another receptacle. If there is a ground conductor in the box a simple light will let you identify the phase conductors. For a new wiring device, the neutral terminal screws will be "white" in color and be on the side of the receptacle with the larger slots. You need to get a wiring device which has "feed-through" terminals to protect downstream devices. The switch in your new device should be fed through the incoming feed, and you would run a phase and neutral conductor to the light fixture.
