An express train and a local train leave a station at the same time (on separate tracks) and head for a town 50 miles away. The express travels twice as fast as the local and arrives 1 hour ahead of the local. Find the speed of each train.
Let:
u mi / hr be the speed of the local,
t hr be the time it takes,
The speed of the express is 2u mi / hr.
The time taken by the express is t - 1.
For the express:
50 = 2u(t - 1)
50 = 2ut - 2u ...(1)
For the local:
50 = ut ...(2)
Substituting for ut from (2) in (1):
50 = 100 - 2u
2u = 50
u = 25 mi / hr.
Substituing for u in (2):
50 = 25t
t = 2 hr.
