How do I stop a halogen ballast from buzzing with a dimmer?
I have a chandelier with 20 12v 10w halogen bulbs in it. It is quite bright so I bought a dimmer and installed it. Now when I dim it it buzzes, quite a lot actually. Is there any way to solve this? I have another lighting feature in another part of my house with about 50 of the same bulb type in mini cans on a ceiling but they buzz less (maybe cause the ballast is up in the ceiling not in the unit?) I read somewhere that its the filament but it's definitely the ballast.
The thing is I have a similar lamp in my bedroom it has 20 of the same bulbs in it and was much less expensive than the chandelier (not that that means anything I guess), but I installed the same dimmer there and it worked perfectly with no buzz at all.
The fixture has to have a transformer (not ballast) somewhere. (to take it from 120 down to the 12v) on the dimmer itself it should say if it is a magnetic dimmer or an electronic dimmer, my guess if the transformer itself is in the fixture it will be electronic, due to they are typically smaller. The dimmer should say to be used with an electronic one if so and vice verse if it is magnetic. That may be the reason of the humming. The other fixture you said had mini can bulbs, mini cans are typically a 120v halogen bulb, therefore you probably wont hear the dimmer humming. If this doesn't help contact an electrician.
