frost tattoo on my standard bred horse?
I have a 6 year old standard bred and he has a frost tattoo on his neck but also on the back of his hind legs are a pattern of small white spots on both leg which also look like frost tattoo, someone told me this was from a injury and someone told me that they do that when a horse might fall in a race, he use to race buggy before i got him does any one know what these spots are? Are they tattoos or a injury and the way they treated his injury caused the spots?
You are correct ! The spots of little dot sized white spots you see on the back of your horses legs, were from a treatment for a injury to that area. The treatment is called " Freeze Fireing " or Cryo Fireing. This is used when a horse has a problem with a tendon or ligament and actually helps to generate and promote blood flow to the injured area. The process uses a gun type instrument that actually places super cold liquid nitrogen to the area, after this process, much like the freeze brand on your horses neck, the hair looses it's color pigment cells and grows in white. Often in standardbreds, a rea that is often fired behind is almost directly in back of the hock area that is referred to as the curds, which is a ligament that often is not really injured, but becomes strained, inflamed and painful when the horse is 2 or 3 ,. This treatment helps to promote added blood flow to the area, hence alleviating the problems.
