How much current would pass through a HV PS (10kv neon trans) charging a 1000 uf Cap?
I'm having a problem figuring out how much current would pass through a 10KV neon sign transformer (using a full-bridge rectifier to convert to DC of course) trying to charge a 1000 uf capacitor (Resistance say... 30 ohms). Neon sign transformers are low current devices by design. According to the equations for charging a 1000 uf capacitor the current would be ridiculously high just after the switch closed approximately ~333 amps. Would that not damage the Power Supply? If not, why? And how would that effect the charging time of the capacitor?
I suspect neon sign transformers are inherently current limited, although I've never used one.
That current limit would limit the current into the cap. How much that is, depends on the transformer design. Wikipedia says about 100 ma.
100 mA would charge a 1000 µF cap to 10 kV in a time of:
CV = it
t = 1000µ*10k/0.1 = 100 sec
Do you really have a 1000 µF 10 kV capacitor? seems ridiculously high in C or in V.
When charged, it would have energy of 50 kJ, quite a bit.
