Outdoor Flush Mount
I need to install an outdoor fixture on the side of my garage but I dont understand the instructions. Read on.

My question is this....
I have vinyl siding on the outside of my garage. I am assuming I have to put an old work box there to mount the fixture to.
I dont understand how to make this flush against the siding.
Also, do I have to cut the siting to installl the old work box?
Step by step instructions will earn 10 points!

First, you will have to use "an old workbox" we will call it an octagon box, and it will go on the exterior sheathing ( behind the vinyl siding), but mounted from the inside of the garage, not the outside. The work will be done from the inside. Only three holes will be drilled in the siding...one centered for the wiring, and two small horizontal holes for the mounting studs to project.
There are two ways to mount the fixture against the siding.
One, is to place the fixture against the irregular siding at a height that has the back of the fixture rest so it is vertical, not leaning in or out from the wall.
Two, is to purchase a vinyl mounting block from a homecenter for about $6 and hopefully you like the results. Not a perfect solution, but may be doable.
I recently did the same installation. , You will need to do the following things.
Purchase a vinyl mounting block, an octagon box, and longer screws to mount the lite.
Determine the exact location of the lite. Have access from the inside of the garage to the back of the outside wall to hook up wires and fasten box. Drill holes in siding (one for each mounting screw (2) and a hole for the wires. in the center about 1" diameter.
Do you have drywall? If so,
Determine roughly where the lite is going and neatly cut out a reasonable size square to work within the wall cavity. Make it large (stud to stud, and about 12-16" high. Save the piece. No need to make the project any more difficult by making a small hole. And, re-installing the cutout piece is easier than dealing with little access. This also will allow you to see there is nothing in the way of the box, and wiring.
To flush up to the siding using a vinyl mounting block.
First, determine the size siding you have. Measure vertically from pt to pt on the siding. You will most likely have 3, 4, or 8 inches. Go to a homecenter and ask for a vinyl siding mounting block for an exterior lite. It will be flat on the front for the fixture to rest, and saw-toothed on the back side to match the profile of the siding. I know they have 4" and comes in different colors. Its about $6 (If they dont have your size, I can only suggest making one out of wood.)
Next you will need an octagon box (for mounting lite fixtures)
Place the vinyl mounting block , if using one, or just the lite fixture on the exterior wall, where the lite will go. This will allow you to determine the location (height) of the octagon box. to be installed inside the garage. Mark the location and drill a hole (1") in the center of the location the lite mounts to the wall. This is the hole you will put the wires through.
Now, take the mounting strap from the hardware that came with the lite and screw it to box and adjust the strap (it rotates) to the horizontal postiion. Tighten! The holes in this strap is where you put the screws in that support the lite fixture. (The screws that come with the fixture are too short....you will need to replace them with longer screws ( I think 2" or 2 1/2" will do...you can get them at the homecenter)
Now, from inside the garage, place the box where you intend it to go, align the center of the box with the 1" hole you drilled, and mark the locations where the two fixture screws go. Drill these 2 holes ( 1/4" will do)
You now should know the exact location the box will set. From inside the garage, place the box where it will go, and mark
Now, inside the garage, anchor the octagon box tight against the exterior sheathing.
To anchor the box: I cut a pc of wood to go from one stud to the other in the opening. Then, determine where the box should be located along the pc of wood, mount the box to the wood (2x4) and fasten securely the wood with box to the studs on the left and right.
install wiring to box, and fish wires through to the outside.
You should now have a box mounted securely with wires and two mounting studs sticking out on the exterior. Hook-up wires and install fixture using the nuts on the studs.
Keep this in mind, you are installing something that is covered on the outside (no access) and basically the same on the inside, so each step gives you less and less access to the wires, and the mounting of the fixture. So, plan ahead.
