I need advice on Humboldt State University...?

From a current student or graduate. I want to know:
Is it a good school? As in, are the academics good? I'm planning on being a zoology major.
Is it true that it's only fun if you're a pot head?
Are there a lot of outdoor activities to do? Such as hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, etc...
Are the people there friendly and easy to get along with? How about the people in the town?
I posted this earlier yesterday but nobody answered it so I'm trying again.

You might have had a little trouble when you said "...only fun if you're a pothead?" But I can see what you're trying to say, so here's my take:

Humboldt State has some good programs-- I personally met some very dedicated and serious nursing students who were better than many I have seen in other places. I don't know any zoology majors, but I had a wonderful time exploring both the massive redwood forests as well as the very amazing ocean life.

Humboldt County is picturesque. It is an unbelievable place of majestic, untamed beauty. The cons? To grow 500 ft trees, you have to have serious rainfall. It rained almost every day I was there for six months, very heavy in the Spring. But I love rain, so I didn't mind. And if you want to hike, you will be delighted in the availability of breathtaking ocean views.

You won't find any large towns; Eureka and Arcata, the larger, are both pretty slow-moving. The area was inaccessible except by boat for eons. And this allowed the native tribes to exist into modern times, so you have a very proud Native American heritage group active and well. This is very special, too.

About the potheads, fyi: yes, they are there. Many people live simply, off the land, and marajuana seems to be very acceptable. I found some of the unbathed, anarchist, lost in the 1960's tanget rather amusing and part of the unique dynamic. Many people there do not want modern conveniences, and this is their lifestyle choice. Organic, vegan, anti-government influences are notable. I would love to visit again. It is a wonderful retreat from consumerism, and the crab harvest still makes my mouth water.

The people are very friendly and always generous. If you want to find good academics, you will. If you are easily distracted, you can be. But that's true for any place. I wish you luck.
