What are these painted signs that are around DC? Some have something that looks light a light on top?
I just moved to DC and I keep noticing these painted signs on different street corners. They kind of look like a historical marker of some sort. They often have a painted picture on them with a bronze plaque on the back or they have the picture missing and look like an empty call box. I know that they are brown around New York Ave. near M St. and they are green in Glover Park and Georgetown. Washingtonians, please tell me what these things are!!!
I believe you're referring to the old fire/police alarm boxes, which used to be scattered around the city. Now that virtually everyone has a telephone, including portable cell phones, the city decided to discontinue their use. Rather than ripping them all down, some were allowed to remain in place, where the neighbors can "adapt" them to artistic uses.
