how to put up ceiling lighting without lighting box?
The issue: room is dark and but doesn't have enough room for lots of floor lamps. It has a couple of wall sconces but they don't provide much light. I would really like overhead lighting but with no box in the ceiling (and obviously would prefer not have a cord going all over the wall and ceiling) I am stumped.
just to add some clarity. I can't run a wire in the ceiling as this is a bottom level in the house (so no crawl space) the only rewiring option would be to rip out all drywall in the room to redo wiring, which is what i hope to avoid

I would personally put in some lights recessed or ceiling mounted
But, yes you do need a box cut in or what is called a pancake box
a pancake box is mounted directly on the ceiling and the wire is pulled in thur the back from above.
what you could do that would be ugly but legal is take one of the wall sconces down cover it and adapt out of the box in wire mould (brand name of product)run that across the wall and ceiling to a box and mount a fixture to that
If you have an open attic above this room then i would do it the right way, this would instantly cut the cost down to higher an electrician.
also an electrician could probably pick up power from the wall sconces to power recessed lighting a skilled guy could do this with minimal damage to the plaster/drywall.
