how much is an indian head error penny worth?
i recently bought a bunch of unsearched indian head pennies from an estate sale and i think i might have received two error coins but i haven't been able to find any similar error coins out there and was wondering if an expert could help me figure it out. one is a 1891 in very good condition but it appears to have been stamped on a silver coin slate rather than copper. the other is a 1890 in extra fine condition with full liberty on the obverse but appears to never have been stamped on the reverse! it is completely smooth with no blemishes. if anybody knows of any examples of similar coins, how i could go about authenticating my coins, or how much they might be worth please help me out. thanks!
Each of these cents should weight 3.11 grams or the same as a Lincoln Cent made before mid-1982 with the exception of the 1943 zinc coated steel. The 1891 might be plated with nickel or silver, or it might have been struck on the wrong planchet which could be a different size, metal, and/or weight. The 1890 might have been altered after leaving the mint. It is possible when the blank planchet entered the press, there was another planchet stuck in one of the dies so that when your coin was struck one of the dies was blocked by the other planchet leaving one side smooth. It is known as a uniface strike or an early counterbrockage error, and it could be worth quite a bit. The coins need to be seen, so you could look for a coin dealer who specializes in error coins.
