Wiring a 3-way switch - Need Clarification?
I am replacing two 3-way switches that control a single light. For one of them, I am using a 3-way switch with a dimmer. I think I understand the basics but I have a couple of questions. The color coding doesn't seem to add up. On switch A, I have a bare copper wire, a white wire and 2 black wires. On switch B, I have 2 black wires and 1 white wire.
Can I assume that the bare wire is the ground and that the black wires are the travelers and the white wires are the common? This color coding seems to go against everything I have been reading. Also, I read that with 3-way switches, you can only use ONE dimmer and the dimmer should be hooked up to the switch that has the ground wire. Does that sound correct?

Never trust color coding, especially on a 3 way switch.
Test each wire and mark it.
On a 3 way switch, all wires are HOT except ground.
I have never tried using a dimmer on a three way switch, and would not recommend it. I would guess that the dimmer must be connected between the incoming hot wire before the first switch.
