What is the best way to mount a framed chalkboard flush to a wall?
I have a framed chalkboard I want mounted to my kitchen wall. The chalkboard arrived today with two small screws and two looped attachments (for it to presumably hang on the wall). However, I want the chalkboard to be flush, unmoving, and fully-mounted to the wall (if possible). Would love some DIY advice on the best way to achieve this. Thank you.
It kind of depends on what the frame is made of, how thick it is, and is it is important to if you see the fasteners on the face of the frame or not.
Drilling through the frame and attaching the frame to the wall studs with the heads of the screws exposed is a bit crude and can certainly have a less than desirable look. If you choose this method there are some screws that will look better than others, cabinet washers and even wooden plugs you can use to cover the screws so long as the screws are recessed into the face of the frame by drilling(not all the way through) in advance to the size of the plug to be used.
A second method (and I think preferred) would be a French cleat. These are interlocking wooden (sometimes metal) brackets that 1 part mounts to the chalk board and the other to the wall. These are easy and quite sturdy. A quick youtube search for “French Cleat” will give you a good video demonstration on how to make and use one.
Lastly, another way that would leave the face of the chalkboard untouched would be to and use a dowel rod or metal rod.
Then I would drill into the chalkboard from the back side into the frame about ½ way through the frame. Be sure to drill the holes into the back of the frame the same width as the studs they will be mounted into (very important). Glue the dowel rods into the frame (be sure they are nice and straight 90 degrees to the back side of the frame).
Then drill through the wall board and into the stud a predetermined depth around 1 ½ inch or so and equal in width to the position of the dowels on the frame with a bit just over the size of the dowel or metal rod so that it will slide in and put easily.
Once the glue on the dowels have dried slide them into the holes in the wall. The dowels should fit snugly in the holes in the studs and be quite secure and stable.
This will take a bit of craftsmanship and time to lay things so that all of the holes and dowels line up the way they should.
