I have a ceiling fan with 3 wires (black, white, black with white strip)?

Im in a new house and In the ceiling there is 4 wires (black, white, Red, and ground) The switch is a new switch with a dimmer slider as well as an on off switch. They are both in the same switch. I connected the black to black white to white and the red to the black and white striped wire. When i turn the power back on the dimmer slider controlls the fan and the wsitch part controls the lite, If i switch the wires (red to black and Black to black with white stripe the same thing happens...Help!!! I want the switch part to control the light and the dimmer to control the light. Can the fan be hot at all times and use the pull chain?

If I understand you correctly,
you bought a new dimmer switch for a light fixture, not a fan/light controller switch, there is a big difference.
The wall switch has a slide dimmer to adjust and preset the light level and a toggle switch to turn the lamp on/off, correct?
(they do not work separately as individual switches)

if it where me I would just get the correct fan/light controller switch, why lose fan control when you don’t have too? Use the dimmer in another room if you cant return it.

you can use this switch to just control the light on the fan and power the fan directly
(which is all you should do with it because its not rated for the amperage draw a fan motor uses)

If I’m wrong and that is a fan/light controller switch,
what you did should have worked,and maybe you just have a bad switch

if want to power the fan direct you need to do this in the wall box behind the switch not in the ceiling
tie the black wire from the ceiling directly together with the black wire (power feed)
from the wall before the switch not through the switch
leave your red wire connected through the switch to the ceiling for the light connection

you probably know this but,
Safety first /always shut the breaker off
