Weatherproof cabinet for an outdoor TV?
Any suggestions on building/purchasing something like this for an outdoor mounted tv? I tend to go out back on the deck alot with friends and smoke cigars. Now that MLB playoffs are starting and NBA season is starting (and I live in the home of the BIG 3) it would be nice to be able to watch some sports with my Padron. I have a retractable awning so it is not always out. The tv would be under a soffit, but would still get wet if it was raining,
I don't want to spend the $5-6K for an outdoor tv, so I figured I would build a weatherproof cabinet. I have a friend in the boat customization business and he said he could get me some high grade weather stripping. Just wondered if anyone else has tried this successfully.
I would still recommend the outdoor TV route, but if you want to experiment with the case, you basically need an enclosure with a plastic/glass face that's pretty sealed up. I would also recommend maybe an opening and a small fan in the back that is protected enough not to admit entry of water, but allow air to escape so moisture doesn't fog up in the inside too much.
And you'll want to avoid spending too much on the TV because it'll be an experiment in resiliance to condensation and temperature and such.
They used to make these kinds of enclosures for CRTs, you're really just making a big sealed box with an air vent. But the displays inevitably failed with greater regularity than having them inside obviously, but it works pretty well as long as they're not utterly exposed to the outside. Anything under a porch roof or an awning or something is better.
