how do i apply sheetrock mud to fix water damage on ceiling?
i had water damage on my living room ceiling. the leak is fixed but the paint was loose and fell off. now i have about a 4 foot, 2 inch line that needs new texture to blend with my ceiling. the ceiling looks like they used sheetrock mud that they mopped on for style. what should i buy to use a mop to get the same style/texture as the rest of the ceiling?
Over solid drywall, put on a light coat of joint topping compound. You can use premixed from a plastic bucket, but I prefer to mix my own from dry powder. Note there are fast dry types that may dry too fast. Try a 90 minute type so you have time to work with it. First get the pattern duplicated on practice boards (old plywood, drywall, cardboard or whatever). You can try a whisk broom, a wallpaper brush, a stomping brush (paint or drywall aisle of the home improvement store) or whatever you have around that looks like it would duplicate the texture. You may have to use a thicker or thinner topping compound mix to get it right. When your practice board looks right, do the same pattern on the ceiling. I would start in the middle of the hole and work out to the edges. Blending new work to the old pattern may take some trial and error. While the topping is wet, you can "erase" mistakes with a drywall knife and a wet rag, then try again. Good luck!
