I need a formula for a tracking system.?
Say I am in a tank, and my enemy is also in a tank. Now I am holding still with my barrel looking strait at him. He is moving at a set speed. I need to shoot in front of him, but how far?
I have his speed and his heading. Also I know the speed of my weapon.
Now all I need is a formula.
Do you guys have one for me?
It's easier than you might think. Always draw a picture!
Make a dot for your position and another dot for your enemies initial position and let the initial distance between you be "a". Mark that distance on your picture.
Make third dot (forming a triangle) where your weapon hits the enemy and draw the line from you to that point. If "t" is the time it takes your weapon to get there and "b" is the speed of your weapon, then the length of that line is "bt". Mark that on your picture.
If the enemy's speed is "c", then the length of the third side of the triangle (opposite to where you are) is "ct". Mark that on your picture.
You also know the enemy's heading, that should give you the angle between side "a" and side "ct". Call that "d" in your picture.
You want to know the angle between your enemy's current position and the position where your weapon would hit him (what direction to shoot). Apply the Sine Law.
Sin(Angle) / ct = Sin(d) / bt , SO: Angle = ArcSin( c/b Sin(d) )
Which tells you how far ahead of your enemy to aim. You don't even need to know "a"!
Curiously, if c>b (your enemy is moving faster than your weapon) there might be TWO solutions, provided that d is acute and Sin(d)
