Can anyone make sense of these passages from the Book of Thomas?
It is interesting reading what with all the theories and history of it, but some of it (like the 2 below) just don't seem to make any sense at all. Can anyone help me out with them?
----------------------
12. Jesus said “This heaven is to pass away, and that which is
above it is to pass away. Those who are dead shall not live, and
those who live shall not die. The days in which you yourselves
were eating that which is dead, you were making it that which
lives. When you yourselves come into the light, what shall you do?
On the day when you were one, you were all made two; but when you
all become two, what is it that you shall do?”
--------------------------
31. Jesus said “In a place which has three gods there, in God they
are. In the place which has two or one, I exist with him.”
First off these aren't canonical books of the Bible. So I don't think most Christians will be entirely familiar with these passages.
On that first verse, it looks like he's first talking about something that similar to when Jesus said in the Bible Matthew 25:29 "For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him." That's what that sounds like. The other stuff, looks to me like it's making reference to Gnostic beliefs, that current Christians don't have. Maybe if you study a little on Gnostic beliefs, it might shed light on what this may be referring to.
The second verse sounds like what Jesus spoke about in Matthew 18:19-20 when he said, "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." You have to understand that the Gnostics had different beliefs and they had ideas that all humans were gods, and that would explain the god reference. Also, I think they had a different conception between God the Father and Jesus, and perhaps that's why they specifically delineate the diffrences bewteen God and Jesus.
The Gospel of Thomas is not a part of the Christian Bible of mainstream Christians, although I'm not sure if some Eastern Churches may believe in it. I know that the know-extinct Gnostic Christianity did believe in these texts. Gnostic Christians believed in different ideas, and you can't really read these texts without understanding what they believed in. It was different from what current Christians believe. I would recommend you check "wikipedia.com" so you can start researching Gnosticism and other related topics. It is a subject that I very much like. I like how reading these things connect me to the past. These were things that only the top, most-learned scribes would read, and now it's available for all. It's pretty neat actually.
***One rule of thumb, when reading antique, historical stuff, whenever something doesn't seem to make sense, it could be one of two things, a fuzzy translation OR they the writer is making reference to something you don't know about. What I'm saying is a writer, unless he made a technical error, would not purposely write something that makes absolutely no sense (unless it was comedy, I guess), but that's what's so unique about looking at these writings, almost 2,000 years later and trying to discern what exacty the expressions mean, and that's what historians and you yourself are doing when you're trying to discern what they wrote. All literature is open to interpretation, so perhaps he was talking metaphorically or symbolically. Sometimes, they're just referring to something simple. I notice, most of the time, the simplest answer, is probably what the writer meant. Again, it's always open to interpretation, 'cause the only person who truly knows what they meant to write, was the writer.
