Wind turbines are a great idea for harnessing natural resources, so why do they have only three skinny blades?
It seems like they should have more, wider blades at a sharper pitch
in order to make the most use of the wind.
Generally, turbines with only a few blades turn fast.
Think of one with three blades. If the blades can turn 1/3 of a revolution in the time it takes for the wind to pass through the turbine, then it can catch all the wind possible. If you put more blades on but it still tried to turn as fast, each balde would be "fighting" with the next one over the same bit of air.
Conversely, those with several blades turn more slowly.
Some clever chap called Betz worked out many years ago that you can never get more than 59% of the total energy from the wind.
(I don't claim this is a very scientific explanation - the detailed answer would be all about "tip speed ratio" or tsr, i.e. how fast the blade tip is going compared with how fast the wind is blowing.)
