Insulating above a suspended ceiling?
If I use a T-track and 2X4 acoustical type tile wire suspended ceiling with an open attic space above it, can I use a blow-in fiberglass insulation over the tiles to about 12 inches of insulation for R30? Should a very thin plastic barrier be laid down between tiles and insulation, to avoid insulation dropping to the floor when a tile is removed or replaced? And, should I add some kind of vapor barrier over the insulation for when it is humid outside?
Not knowing your temperature extremes makes this a little more difficult to answer correctly.
If you are in a moderate area, the airspace alone is considered an insulation, believe it or not.
I have a garage apartment here in Florida that has open airspace between the drywall ceiling and the metal roof that does surprisingly well. There is block walls to take into account as well.
If you feel that you need to insulate however, use batts as recommended above. The first time you pull a tile to do any maintenance you will cuss yourself for the blown in insulation.
If you are worried about heat, I have had many custommers that appreciated my recommendation of a ridge vent along the top of their asphalt shingled roof.
That very inexpensive and easy to install upgrade makes huge gains in letting summer heat escape.
Unless you are in an area plagued by temperatures that go to extremes, an R-13 batts will work well, no need to go with a thicker insulation.
By the way, the kraft (paper) facing is your moisture barrier, so be sure to face it towards your ceiling tile, (down).
