making a mini installation with battery fans and was wondering what type of potentiometer I could use?
The fans are 3v each, I have 6 to run from a potentiometer (or several). I test tried one fan out with a slider potentiometer, but the fan stops then does not start up again until i manually wind it so it spins when the voltage is high.
It sounds like your fans won't start on the low voltage provided by the pot. Put a voltmeter on the fan then dial up the voltage till the fan starts, this is the minimum voltage the fan needs to start.
As for the pot to use, you could check the current draw when the fan is running. Multiply this times the voltage and it is the wattage. You want a pot that is rated for that wattage, if the pot can't handle the wattage it will burn out.
There are other ways to do it with a lower wattage pot but it would take other components and the circuit is more complicated. It would use what is called a pass transistor if you want to research it.
