i have a light with a pull string( no wall swich), what would happen if i took thye light fixture out and?
replaced it with a light swich?
You wouldn't (reroute) the wire to the switch. First make sure the circuit is turned off. Leave the existing cable in the box that the fixture is mounted to. Run a new NM cable (14/2 if its on a 15 amp circuit, 12/2 for a 20 amp) from the fixture box to the switch box. Connect the bare wire to the green terminal, the white wire to the top of the switch, black wire to the bottom. Now to the fixture. Wirenut the bare wires together, if the light fixture has a grounding connection you will need to tie that in to your bare wires also, leave the white wire from the existing cable connected to the fixture, remove the black wire from the fixture and wirenut it to the white wire from your new cable. The black from your new cable terminates on the fixture in the same place that the original black was. Any metal boxes used should be grounded, and cable stapled (not from a staple gun!), except where fished.If your unsure,,, call an electrician.
